To You From Super Me has won the title of best Third Sector project in the West Midlands Arts, Health & Wellbeing awards.
Sandwell Council’s Young People's Service launched the project last year with eight young people and Birmingham-based organisation Friction Arts.
The group held workshops to explore autism and other people's perceptions of autism.
They came up with the theme of superheroes in collaboration with Marvel/DC comic book illustrator John McCrea and celebrated image-maker Chris Keenan.
The result was an interactive art installation showing aspects of the young peoples’ personalities which was exhibited at The Public art gallery in West Bromwich.
The first exhibition was such a resounding success, it was brought back for a second six month run.
Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for children’s services Councillor Simon Hackett said: “This is a great award for the young people and artists who put everything into making this project a resounding success.
“Congratulations to our Young People’s Service for creating a project which gave young people the confidence to exhibit their work in a large public gallery space to tell their stories.”
The scheme was funded through a partnership between Sandwell Council and the National Lottery Awards for All scheme.
